STERLING BRITISH MOTORING SOCIETY -- January 19, 2004

Things are hopping here in Old Kentucky, despite the fact that all molecular action has come to a halt as a result of the onslaught of winter. Still, such travail offers an opportunity for planning and indoor fun, and that’s just what the Sterling British Motoring Society has done, through social events and less-exciting but nonetheless important group decisions.

First, the Society had a fine Christmas party at Graham’s Grill. Although, again, your editor was unable to attend because of some important prior commitment which has now been totally forgotten, word is that the food and drink were terrific, and that the usual group camaraderie was in full swing. The club followed its usual practice of a complicated game which permits those drawing later gifts to "lift" those in lieu of the one actually opened. Oh well, far too complicated to explain here, but suffice it to say that the process results in some hilarious results. Reports are that most recipients were happy to keep their gifts this year, although it is unknown whether that is a good or bad thing.

Second, the Club is entering a new era, given the decision by Mike Razor to step down as president. For those not in the know, Mike and Sallie essentially created the Club a number of years ago, and built it from scratch to an organization which now numbers 40 or 50 members. Words cannot describe the commitment and work which the Razors have expended over the years; without delving into syrupy platitudes, it is safe to say that this outfit would not have existed absent their energy and devotion.

Third, the new era has, naturally enough, resulted in new officers, as follows:

Member Services: Danny Morton & Bill Dahlstrom
Treasurer: Jimmy Browning
Vice-President and Bash Chair: Kevin Terry
President: Paul Dolloff
Newsletter Editor: Catesby Woodford

These folks are highly qualified, seasoned veterans of SBMS. All have an abiding interest in British vehicles, all speak English, and all are raring to go. Let’s give them our unqualified support.

You will note that another change this year, in that the Vice-President will now also be in charge of planning The Bash which will, as always, be held on the first weekend in May. Kevin and his team are busy outlining all that needs to be done and will be looking for volunteers to help make this year’s Bash another successful event. Once the agenda for the three day weekend is set, members will be asked to help with various tasks and agenda items. In the meantime, mark your calendar for the Bash weekend: April 30 - May 2, at The Springs Inn, Lexington.

We are also planning a big year in terms of drives, with the following monthly destinations, and coordinators:

Otherwise, we continue to meet each month on the First Tuesday at 6:00 for cocktails, followed by a lavish dinner at Otherwise, we continue to meet each month on the First Tuesday at 6:00 for cocktails, followed by a lavish dinner at 6:30 and then our meeting. Typically, our gathering place is Graham’s Grill at Old Silo Golf Course in Mt. Sterling, but from time to time we do pop around to other places. Matters of huge moment are discussed, and many fascinating innovations are in evidence. One such has been the fabrication and issuance of name tags, which permits the old people among us to remember who we are. Another is the elimination of the "door prizes" in favor of a free dinner but only for those aforementioned members who display their name tag.

Tune in next month for more news. In the meantime, feel free to contact our officers with your ideas as to how to improve our club.
